Week 27- Physicalization

The primary focus of tracking was being hyperlocal. We contemplated on how we could combine the aspects of our individual maps and combine them. Distinguishing a map by the days in a week would be beneficial. After a week, the user could store information on a digital platform. If one gets infected, they would be needed to share their maps to a hyperlocal community for the last two weeks through the digital platform. This helps in community building and develops a sense of achievement for helping your community be safe.

Designing the layout for the physical map, we thought of categorizing location by different color circles that would clip on to the board. The board itself would have sections for the days of the week.

USER CASE:

I have been to the market on Monday with my brother. So I will add a blue pin on Monday. As I went with my brother, I will put the small black pin on top of the blue pin, which signifies I have been there with someone.

As Nancy had access to a wood workshop, we decided to get the board and the pins laser cut. Nancy painted the pins according to the legend.

The physical board was made out of wood and was 75cm. We initially decided that it could be a table which is kept as the coffee table. Although, due to living conditions, we thought it would be better if it was hung up on the wall.

While Nancy was making the physical model, Amber and Felix started the initial wireframes for the digital platform. We decided that a physical map could be uploaded on the platform, it will be scanned and that data could be shared through that platform.

I also started leaning p5 so that we could have a proof of concept of recognizing pins on the specified days. I took this up as a challenge as I had no prior knowledge of coding whatsoever and wanted to learn. However, it took much more time than expected.

I also started making the visuals for the wireframes. We chose to do user flows and design the app accordingly.

Feedback

We had a peer review for this presentation. Most of the cohort was surprised by the amount of work we had achieved and were happy with the idea of the map. On the other hand, almost everyone said that the app was a little unfinished and had a lot of unnecessary information.

Inspiration from project

We also looked into a project,“Bit planner” by Special projects. This project gave us a deeper understanding of how to merge the physical and the digital aspects. We also got inspired by the simplicity with the grid as well as the colors.

Takeaway

It was great to learn to code and take it up as a challenge. Even though it took a lot of time to do a simple thing as I was inexperienced, it was interesting to see it work out.

Looking back, I feel that we could have first marked out the user flows properly and then started with the visuals of the app.
