Week 25- The personal diary

After the feedback we received from Steph, we started looking at the problem framework in a different perspective. We decided to work again on the concept of giving control to the users for building trust.

We were actually really confused after the feedback of our project. We decided to brainstorm again, and Nancy and Amber came up with the idea of something really personal as a diary. All of us liked this idea, but we were a little unsure of how this would work. We decided to take help from John. He really liked the idea and told us to research about self-tracking.

I found self-tracking and the quantified self to be really interesting. I listened to this video by Buster Benson- Why I track? which gave me a good insight into the concept. Self quantified is basically self-tracking to be informed of self-knowledge through numbers. Self-tracking is usually done through apps and various other technologies. Gary Wolf and Kevin Kelley, are the founders of the platform, Quantified self. The platform helps you with self-tracking tools and also allows you to share your data to a community platform.

People track themselves to feel more in control through numbers. Self tracking helps build habits and improve memory as well.

Self-tracking allowed us to build trust within users and also look at this through a microscopic lens.

Nancy worked on the elements of a diary and what exactly consists of a diary. She also worked on digitally extending analog self-tracking with additional values, rather than replacing the use of pencil and paper, and supporting digital self-tracking as a mindful design practice.

We decided to self-track ourselves with the help of a diary. We decided which elements we were tracking- location, people, and time. These variables were essential ones to track human contact. We asked other people to do this exercise with us as well.

This was my diary entry.

We realized that all of us had tracked ourselves differently which was really interesting. It was good to see people using different media to track the same variables in their lives.

Feedback

Alistair thought the concept was really strong and based on theoretical principles. He encouraged us to think about generative toolkits. He also gave us a reference of Frances Yeats- Recall a journey.

We also spoke about building through memory and the concept of a memory palace. He also encouraged us to think about how this information will be shared.

Takeaway

Our group was confused at the start as to what our feedback actually meant. It was a struggle to actually think about things from a completely new point of view. I definitely learnt

how to work with a completely different perspective.
