Week 19 - Final week

We first decided to finish all the prototypes/artifacts. I finished the telephone, by putting a speaker inside.

We also thought of making a newspaper stand for the fake newspapers, where we could show how we planned to display these artifacts and also the branding. Hannah and I first cut MDF out of the waste and painted it black. We made joineries with wood and laser cut the logo of culture mile.

We also came up with projecting a ghost for part of the butchers story. I laser cut acrylic in the cut out of a girl. Alexandra took a video of herself dressed as a ghost. And we projected it on the panel.

Alexandra also made a map which showed the characters journey through Smithfield. This made it easier for people to understand the overlap between the stories. Unfortunately, we did not document this.

Final Presentation

We wanted to perform a story for the Culture mile people, but our narratives were too long for that. After a lot of debate, we decided to perform the wife selling auction mentioned in the fake newspaper. Alexandra posed as my wife, and I was the husband. We started the bidding at 50 shillings and it raised to 500. Alas, it fell to 0 when they learned she could not bear children. It was all in good fun to demonstrate a gory history with a hint of comedy.

Lili also distributed flyers of the missing pig, and she was dressed up as a butcher. Meanwhile, Hannah was dressed up as a pig, and she was hiding in class.

After the performance, we explained our concepts and showed them our artefacts and the map.

How is this project beneficial to Culture mile?

These narratives can be used as a good way to interest people in the city of London in the history of Smithfield. With the upcoming museum of London in Smithfield, these artifacts can be used as an advertising campaign for the museum as well.

Stories can help reach people on the go who do not necessarily have time to participate in all cultural events.

Feedback

Overall, Jamie liked our concept and the way of presentation. He mentioned that the stories which are site specific can definitely interest people in the history. Our classmates were excited to know the history of Smithfield through these designed objects. John said that the map was a little weak as it did not really convey where the artefacts would be placed.

Reflection

This project taught me to apply theoretical readings into practical work. It was good to explore the stories which led us to think from other person's point of view. Collaborating with this group was easy as we had a similar wavelength and worked quite well together. It was also a fun project as we had to explore and fabricate stories.
