Week 13 - Workshop overview and structure

Tanvi Kulkarni

26th — 10th December

I decided to go ahead with a workshop/ interactive conversation as my final outcome. This workshop was meant for students of 9-13 primarily, but it can be adapted for all ages. This workshop would be supported with the help of the pop-up book as well as the masks.

The workshop would be in 2 stages-

1st stage

This stage of the workshop would involve participants making their own masks. This would involve making their own identity in a world set in Mahabharata.

I would provide them the base materials for making these masks.

Process

For the making of these masks, I laser cut the base of the masks and painted them in the chhau mask style.

I also laser cut some elements for the crown and other adjoining accessories, like eyebrows, mustaches, jewelry, and decorative items.

This would allow participants of the workshop to create their own identities. I would ask members to also give names to their characters and assume the role of the character.

They would have to have a conversation with each other for 15 minutes assuming their character. They would have to talk about their strengths and weaknesses and tell stories by their imagination.

Here, I have made different combinations which would be possible for the participants to make -

The second stage of the workshop, after the members have spent 15–20 minutes assuming their character would be to read the pop-up book together. I thought having one book to pass around would create a sense of co-creation.

Each member had to read one page of the book and continue the story. This pop-up book would have activities to perform and some pages had artifacts to conversate.

The whole book had to be read by being in character.

This allowed members to LARP into the story and be comfortable speaking about taboo topics which they would normally feel ashamed to do. This was the process to be followed in the workshop.

Takeaways

This was the first time that I was designing a workshop. Also, due to the pandemic, most of the university was shut. I had difficulties gathering people to participate. I had to be ready to adapt to any situation which arises in the workshop.
