Week 12 - Crazy eights and mythological books

Tanvi Kulkarni

We had a session arranged by Mor and Alistair to help us generate more ideas for the outcome. The strategy was of crazy eights. We had to fold 1 paper in 8 boxes and sketch a different idea in each box. We got only 1 minute for sketching each idea.

My group consisted of : Lili, Allie, Amber and Ana.

I got loads of great ideas -

  1. Make a period fairy.

  2. Use metaphors to teach

  3. Treasure hunts wearing masks

  4. Make a wearable for experiencing pain

As I already had a similar idea to the period fairy, I decided to go ahead with that and sketch it out in the form of a storyboard.

Making the storyboard gave me a much clearer idea of my environment and the way my outcome can be presented. I decided to do a quick research on what the right age to introduce menstruation in India would be.

I decided to make my concept for 9-13 year olds.

The Crazy eight had given me one more idea of conveying the story through a story book. I wanted to explore the concept of pop up book.

I decided to include the magic menstruation machines which I had gotten from the earlier workshop as artifacts in the book and as a part of the story.

Low fidelity prototype of the book -

I decided to include - 'going in the vagina' and 'see my uterus' into the book.

I had to get started on making the final prototype of the book as I had less time left. I first started by dividing the story into pages and deciding the illustration which went on there.

These were some illustrations I created. I wanted them to be in a Madhubani/Bhil (Indian art) style. I collaborated with an artist(name not mentioned on request of the artist) to understand the style and colors of Madhubani and then created these.

I will display all the pages now :

After I had made my book, I thought of the setting where children would read this. This led to me think of having a workshop as a final outcome, where the participants would wear masks and would be LARPing and the facilitator would be the Goddess (Kamakhya devi).
